What is methadone?
Methadone is in a class of drugs known as opioids and is an addiction treatment. This drug was produced by Germany during World War II and was initially used in the United States as a strong pain reliever for very severe pain. Today, in addition to pain relief, this drug is often used as part of the treatment of addiction to heroin or narcotics.
Methadone is available in the form of oral tablets, injectable products, powder and oral solution in the pharmaceutical market of Iran.

How does methadone work?
Methadone works by binding to a type of opioid receptor and activating it. With this function, methadone produces its analgesic and sedative effects. Some other effects such as constipation, respiratory depression, nausea or miosis may also occur due to the binding of this drug to opioid receptors.
In fact, methadone changes the way the brain and nervous system respond to pain in such a way that the patient feels relieved. Its effects are slower than those of painkillers such as morphine.
This drug is used in the treatment of addiction to drugs or substances because it has slow effects and prevents the symptoms of deprivation or withdrawal syndrome. This type of drug addiction treatment is called Replacement Therapy. Alternative therapy can only be implemented with the opinion of a doctor and under the care of specialists because a person suffering from addiction may substitute methadone for his drugs and become dependent on this drug. If methadone is prescribed in order to facilitate the addiction process, we should know that this drug is not used instead of the substance consumed by the individual, but is considered as part of the drug addiction treatment program along with other mental and physical care. .
